Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue, New York I Stand A2

On this year celebrating the 100th anniversary of the invention of photography, we are presenting photographers who display some of the techniques that have characterized the medium for the past century.

Marcel Bolomet was the first official photographer for the United Nations, photographed the League of Nations, the first World Jewish Congress, and the last World Zionist Congress before the outbreak of World War II as well as refugees at the Geneva Red Cross during the conflict. His work has been described as "having the humor, warmth and sensuality of Kertesz and is far more formal and design oriented than Doisneau." Will be on view the very last silver gelatin prints hand-signed by the photographer.

With Promenade de nuit, Paolo Ventura imagines a series inspired by celebrated French writers life in Paris in the 19th century. For this series, he decided to do tintypes. This 19th century photographic process creates a unique direct positive image on a thin sheet of black lacquered iron. A wet collodion emulsion is poured onto the metal plate, sensitized in silver nitrate, then exposed in the camera while still wet. After development and fixing, the dark background makes the image appear as a positive.

Sophie Zénon Botanical Odyssey highlights how European scientific expeditions and colonial expansion played a decisive role in the circulation of plants and in their destinies, closely linked to human movement. True to her attention to materials and craftsmanship, she presents a herbarium and a series of landscapes—delicate, precious works elevated by the gesture of the hand. On her diaphanous photographs of begonias, the gold thread embroideries executed by Maître d’Art Sylvie Deschamps contribute to a form of “de banalisation” of the plant, creating original and unique pieces.

With Flora Incognita, Vincent Fournier brings us in the future. At the intersection of art and science, this speculative herbarium envisions plant life forms capable of adapting to extraterrestrial ecosystems. At the crossroads of reality and fiction, he explores speculative narratives and their modes of representation, employing photography, photogrammetry, 2D/3D hybridization, and immersive animation.
