A graduate of ISA Toulouse and La Cambre, Jean-Baptiste Brueder began exploring architecture and its transformations as soon as he arrived in Brussels. He gradually became interested in the raw aesthetics of construction sites, where finished and unfinished forms coexist, revealing the fragility behind the apparent permanence of buildings.

Brueder explores these areas in transition through walking, collecting, and observational drawing, with his gaze shifting from ornamental details to aerial views. Photographs, fragments, notes, surveys, and archival materials form a research foundation that is reactivated in the studio through a process blending drawing, painting, and bas-relief. Using reused construction materials (plasterboard, concrete, or recycled elements), he brings to light the traces of these built environments as a stratified landscape, composed of historical, social, and material layers that are constantly being rewritten. This process echoes his own medium: surfaces are drawn, painted, engraved, sanded, and carved away in successive layers, or material is removed to reveal lines, volumes, and perspectives, thereby approaching architecture as a malleable sculptural medium.

Winner of the 2023 Médiatine Prize, Brueder has participated in artist residencies such as the Moonens Foundation, Poelp Brussels, and KULTXL, and currently teaches at La Cambre. His works have been exhibited in Belgium and in France, including institutions (Centre Wallonie Bruxelles, 2024, Musées des Augustins, 2017, Musée Saint Raymond, 2015) and fairs (Art Paris, 2026).
